NEW ALBUM - GENTEEL POVERTY AND THE LIKELIHOOD OF RAIN
I have made my new album available via my Bandcamp page. You can listen to it and/or buy it as a download there. I'll be releasing it on other digital platforms in the next couple of days, and CDs will be available later this month. The Bandcamp release comes with a 24 page PDF booklet. There will be a launch at the Polish White Eagle Club in Turner, ACT on the 29th July which will feature me and my band, Mikelangelo and the Tin Star (who are re-forming specially for this gig), The Dreamlanders, Alice Cottee, and more special guests...
Back to the album - Due to various obstacles and delays it took 10 years to record. It features me on vocals and many other instruments, and the following musicians - Phil Moriarty (of the Gadflys), my cousin, Christian Laki, Emma Jasmine Kelly (aka Happy Axe), Emma Dryden, Liam McKahey (of Costeau, and the Bodies) on backing vocals on one song, Geir Brillian, Cazzbo Johns (of Mic Conway's National Junk Band, and formerly of the reformed Captain Matchbox, and Opera Australia), Dirk Zeylmans Van Emmichoven, Blair Merton (aka Randall Blair, of the Wedded Bliss, and the Lonely Fates), Suzan Dlouhy (aka Suzie So Blue) and, very briefly, Mikelangelo playing two notes on a piano. It was produced by me, mostly recorded by me using very basic equipment - MultitrackStudio running on a Acer Aspire One, and later a MacBook Air. It was mastered by Alex Gordon at Abbey Road Studios in London. It is the best thing I have done - Konrad Lenz 01 - JUL - 23

NEW VIDEO CLIP FOR AN OLD RECORDING
Yesterday I cut together a new video clip for a song I recorded back in 2002. It's a strange thing to do but I felt compelled to do so after I slightly tweaked the vocal, it had always been too low in the mix and needed a slight boost but couldn't be corrected because the autoharp and vocal were recorded on the one microphone. Modern AI technology meant I could isolate the vocal in the mix and increase it just that little bit needed.
The song was always meant to be my goodbye to American folk music, not as a listener but as a performer/songwriter. I had listened to a lot of American folk music as a teenager. It influenced me greatly. It's fantastic music, but as an Australian musician I felt that was a bit odd. I had to make my own music. As a goodbye before attempting to move on I tried to sum up part of what I liked in the one song - the odd dream logic that happens in some songs when they get written by many hands, a verse here, a line there, motivations of characters can change from line to line, even the whole morality of a song can sometimes change sharply between verses. The narrator can seem to shift, also the radically different locations parts of songs were written in can sometimes be felt within the lyrics, I have a book on American folk songs that includes the Australian song, Wild Colonial Boy. Having gone through other hands once it made its way to the USA it changed somewhat from what it had started out as. There are American touches to it. I think this distorted logic is part of what Bob Dylan refers to when he suggests folk songs reflect the "old, weird America."
When I cut together the video clip I tried to reflect this dream logic and eclecticism I'm referring to, this feeling of the whole being made from quite disparate sources. I also wanted to somehow incorporate my love of cinema into the clip, and in some ways part of what I liked about folk songs were how cinematic they felt, in a way they were like pre-cinema, they told stories in a similar fashion, only in words and music not pictures. But the words are often so visual and the way they flow and cut from scene to scene is so similar. And the range of stories are similar too, there are love songs, murder ballads, songs about robberies, songs about the issues of the day, serious songs, comedic songs, all sorts of songs. They were popular entertainment back in the day. Apart from the couple of shots of me I used bits of film footage from the early days of cinema (and long out of copyright which makes it easier to use), stuff like Étienne-Jules Marey's early chronophotography and movies, Louis Le Prince's The Roundhay Garden Scene (1888) and Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge (1888), and DW Griffith's highly problematic The Birth of a Nation (1915), not a film I'd really recommend to anyone but students of cinema history. It's well made, innovative, the battle scenes are astounding and feel authentic, but unfortunately the racism of the film is shocking. But the clips from the civil war scenes felt right for that moment in the song.
Did writing this song help exorcise the all pervasive American influence on my music and songwriting? Not quite, I'd say I only really found my own voice about five years ago. But it was a good song, one of my better ones, so that's fine.
I like this recording. I like this video clip.
Happy new year!!! I hope you all have a good and safe one. 01 - Jan - 2021

New video clip directed, shot and cut by me - The Gadflys - Drive
It was great to work with the Gadflys on a promotional clip for the song Drive, a song from their new album, Love and Despair, their first album after a two decade break in recording. This was shot in Sydney over three days. The editing took a bit longer - Dec 4 2019

New music video directed, shot and cut by Konrad Lenz - The Black Horses - To Hell
I recently directed, shot and cut this clip for Canberra duo, the Black Horses.

New music video shot by me - Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen - The Sun Will Shine In
I was director of photography/camera operator on the following clip featuring Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen.
From their website - "With Balkan brass fanfare and much waving of arms, Mikelangelo and The Black Sea Gentlemen release the promotional video clip for their new single, The Sun Will Shine In from the album, After The Flood. Filmed in Canberra last year, the band took some time out from the Big hART production of Ghosts in The Scheme to work with local film maker and Renaissance man Konrad Lenz, set designer Jen Dugard and projectionist Mic Gruchy. The video draws inspiration from the beautiful scenery of the Monaro Plains as well as archival images from the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme." Transfusion Blues available as a digital download on Bandcamp
It seems that CDs have gone the way of the dodo, the vinyl record and the piano roll so now I've finally made my 2009 album Transfusion Blues available to download as a digital thingy. It has 14 of my songs and a cover of my friend Kevin Smith's Room 244 (a great, great song by the way, something along the lines of an early Scorsese type film encapsulated in a four minute song, Kevin's a fine writer.) Oh and it's got updated, new improved cover art.
You can listen to it and/or buy it here - https://konradlenz.bandcamp.com/album/transfusion-blues |

EXHIBITION: A FIELD FOLDED
A Field Folded, 6pm, 25 October 2014 at Salmagundi Studios, 49 Bonar St Arncliffe.
Seeing Bob Dylan perform at the Royal Theatre, Canberra, 29 August 2014
Dylan was great, a ghostly, elegant and incandescent presence with a knowing, raspy drawl. The entire band was fantastic. Most of the songs were from
the last ten or so years, Spirit on the Water, Scarlet Town and Duquesne Whistle being highlights. Of the few old songs he did Simple Twist of Fate stuck out as pure gold, it was far better than I've ever heard it, far better than it was on Blood on the Tracks, astounding. Dylan played some great and odd
piano, part ragtime, part blues, all Bob. The interplay between Bob on keys and Charlie Sexton's guitar was really nice. It was the third time I've seen
Dylan perform. The other times were in Sydney in '92 and in Wollongong in '98. It was easily one of the best gigs I've been to, well worth the week of eating nothing but rice noodles to cover cost of going. At 73 Bob's flame is burning as bright as ever, perhaps even brighter than before. I liked the above photo I took.

GIG AT SMITHS ALTERNATIVE BOOKSHOP 25 OCTOBER 2013
I'm playing a support slot for my friends' band The Gilded Palace of Sin at Smiths Alternative Bookshop 76 Alinga St Canberra ACT this Friday night 25 October.
THESE GLASS EYES CONTINUES UNTIL THE 20TH OCTOBER
We had a good opening at Salmagundi Studios. My old photography teacher from Meadowbank TAFE, Tony Deguara, turned up which was fantastic. He was a great teacher, a great artist and a really nice guy. It was good to see him. I sold a picture too which was nice. I also watched as my friend Kay Orchison coated his photographs in shellac and lit them on fire with a cigarette lighter while they were still drying. There's some great work in the show. I particularly liked Rachel Mounsey's wet plate photographs of children. They are amazing images (see exhibition invite at left for an example of her work). I have photographs of living and dead animals in the show (see below). Yes, it seems we broke the old adage not to work with animals or children. There's great work from Kay Orchison (it survived the flaming) and more great work from Jasmine Poole and Gwenael Laroche. I made the first sale of the show. Yay. The exhibition continues until the 20th October. See below for details. Go check it out if you can.
Exhibition invite photography by Rachel Mounsey.

"Here comes a fistful of bands ready to shatter your dreams and thrill your senses with four distinct styles of dirty rock 'n' roll. Join Konrad Lenz & The Spirits of the Dead, Alexander Cross & The Daggers, She Falls Down Stairs and The Blazing World Revival Orchestra as they emerge from the depths of Sydney's underground onto the Vanguard main stage.
Prepare yourselves for a cacophony of sensual vocals, shredding guitars, and rocking bass lines. Combining ballads of love, sex and violence with a generous dose of the untamed West, each band will seduce you, curse you, and touch you in all the right places in their own unique way."

Konrad Lenz - Subterranean
This album lies somewhere between folk and electronic, probably more towards the folk end. There are a couple of songs written by my friends Tom Woodward and Sam Johnstone. There's several I wrote including a song about Renfield from Bram Stoker's Dracula and a song about a Siamese twin girlfriend. Then there are instrumentals I made to use in the soundtracks of short films of mine including a couple of collaborations with my friend Emma Kelly. I like this record a lot, I hope you do too. Cheers - Konrad Lenz.

Konrad Lenz and the Spirits of the Dead
5 track EP
We began recording these songs on my 30th birthday in 2003. We did these over about 3 recording sessions in James' house in Red Hill which was right next door to Al Grassby's
home. Al Grassby was the Minister for Immigration in the Whitlam government, he was the self styled "father of multiculturalism". I often wondered what Al thought of the loud noises, hoots, laughter and rock and roll that he heard from next door. We probably drove him mad. We were a new band back then, full of life and full of ambition. Ten years down the line we're still going, still full of life and ambition. There have line up changes but the same feeling is there and
band members don't seem to leave for long. They keep returning. I have a fondness for these early recordings. They chart the formation of a band and they map out my early development as an artist. I've just turned 40, the Spirits have just had their 10th anniversary. I thought that it is about time I make these songs more readily available - Konrad Lenz 16 - July - 13

New album Mr Living Good nearing completion
For quite some time now I have been recording a disc, Mr Living Good, an album of 1920s, 30s and 40s jazz and blues. It features me on vocals and the following fine musicians - Mikelangelo, Phil Moriarty, Jim Conway, Cazzbo Johns, Randall Blair, Munro Melano, Gareth Hill, Aaron Peacey and Andrew Dalziell. It was mastered by Geir Brillain. It is the best thing I have done. Sounds amazing. The launch and my 40th birthday gig on 18 July 2013 at the Front Gallery and Cafe, Lyneham, ACT... Entry to the launch $7. Also performing will be the incredible Alice Cottee and theatrical troup A KREWD Ensemble.

Photographs from the Kinetic Fashion Parade
Last night I was one of the official photographers at the Kinetic Fashion Parade held at Westfield Belconnen, ACT. It was the graduating show of fashion design students from the CIT. It's the first time I've photographed a fashion parade. In many ways it is very similar to all the music photography I've done and, as I often find, the stuff that suits my photography all happens off stage. There's a lot of drama backstage that the audience isn't privy to. There's that sense of anticipation and nervousness that is palpable just before a show starts and there's all that activitity which is great to witness - people making sure their makeup is correct, cables being checked, the announcement that in 5 minutes everyone has to keep quiet, the final puffs on a cigarette 10 minutes before going out in front of the crowd, that sort of thing. Another plus as a photographer is that there's a lot more freedom of movement, you don't have to worry that you may be standing in the way of an audience member or a video camera. Another interesting thing was that the heatwave that we are experiencing at the moment seemed to play havoc on my lenses. The lid on my teleconverter wouldn't unscrew and my Asahi lens became awkward to focus. That's the perils of using old equipment I guess.
